Thirteen

The moment Wes spied Miss York at the Bridges’ ball, an overwhelming realization morphed in his mind.

He wanted her.

Maybe he did not want a wife and was not ready for such commitments, but hell, he enjoyed their lessons. Only hours before he decided he would not continue with them, but seeing Harlow again, he knew his adamant stance would not hold.

He wanted her in his bed.

However, the question remained. Would she allow such liberties knowing he did not want a lifelong commitment? He doubted she would. No lady of delicate means such as herself would ever allow such privileges, and he could not help but think what a shame that fact was.

He would take liberties if he could and enjoy every single one of them, and she too, he would wager.

Lady Fairchild droned on about her niece's abilities and suitability to being a man's wife. He smiled and nodded, pretending to be interested as Miss Cullen, too, joined in with her aunt's praises, but he was not invested.

All he wanted was to go to Harlow, whose eyes remained locked on him, burning a path across the room that made his skin prickle with heat.

That he had lit the fire within her sent a longing roaring through him that he wanted to stoke, see how hot he could make her burn.

"If you will excuse me," he said partway through Lady Fairchild stating how many children Miss Cullen had agreed to bear should she find a match.

He broke free, striding toward Miss York. He ignored other attempts from the numerous mamas who tried to gain his attention. Only one woman here this evening interested him, and no one else.

"Good evening, Lady Leigh, Miss York," he said, bowing. He met Harlow's gaze, and a small smile lifted the corners of his lips, no matter how hard he tried to remain aloof before their friends.

"Lord Kemsley, good evening. We did not think you would free yourself so soon from Lady Fairchild. She is not known for allowing eligible young men to escape her clutches, not once she has you within her grip," the viscountess teased, grinning along with Harlow.

He liked seeing her smile. When they had parted at the Collins ball, and she had caught him with Lady Randall, the pain etched on her normally pretty features had burned his heart to a cinder.

"I'm very good at escaping, my lady."

She raised one brow. "That is not what I've heard," she quipped. "If you'll excuse me, my husband is calling me to him." She left Harlow and himself alone before Harlow could utter one excuse to leave with her.

After what they had done at her home earlier this afternoon, he was not sure what kind of reception she would greet him with, but something told him no matter how nervous she was, she welcomed his company.

"And so we're alone again," he teased.

"Not for long, my lord. I'm about to dance with Lord Abercromby," she said as his lordship bowed before them both and took Harlow's hand, leading her away from him.
